Belgian National Day falls on 21 July every year. In 2027 it is a Wednesday, and Brussels hosts the main celebrations around the Royal Palace and the Parc de Bruxelles.
What happens on Belgian National Day?
The day marks the oath of Belgium's first king, Leopold I, in 1831. The programme traditionally includes a Te Deum, a military and civil parade watched by the royal family, a popular festival with stands and concerts around the park and the Place des Palais, and fireworks in the evening.
How do you travel in Brussels on National Day?
Streets around the Royal Palace, Rue Royale and the parade route close for most of the day. Your chauffeur will drop you on the edge of the closed area and meet you there later. If you have business meetings elsewhere in Brussels, note that 21 July is a public holiday and many offices are closed.
Planning your day
- Check the official programme for parade and fireworks times.
- Expect road closures in the upper town.
- Agree a pick-up point outside the closed area.
- Remember that 21 July is a public holiday.
