Lyon's Fête des Lumières returns for four evenings, from 5 to 8 December 2026, with light installations and projections across the city centre, from the Presqu'île to Vieux Lyon and the hill of Fourvière.
What is Fête des Lumières 2026?
The Fête des Lumières grew from a local tradition of placing candles in windows on 8 December, linked to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière. Today it is one of Europe's best-known light festivals, with artists projecting works onto façades, squares and monuments. Many Lyon residents still place candles, or lumignons, on their windowsills on the evening of 8 December.
How do you get to the festival sites by chauffeur?
Large parts of central Lyon are closed to traffic in the evenings during the festival, and crowds are very large. A chauffeur can drop you at a permitted point outside the restricted perimeter and meet you there later, so planning a walking route between installations is essential. From Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, allow around 30 to 45 minutes to the edge of the centre, more in festival traffic.
Planning your day
- Check the official map of installations and closures before you go.
- Wear comfortable shoes, as the festival is best explored on foot.
- Agree a collection point outside the closed perimeter.
- Book restaurants early, as Lyon is very busy on festival evenings.
