How is Easter celebrated in Athens?
On Good Friday, the Epitaphios, a flower-decorated bier, is carried in candlelit processions from churches across the city. On Saturday night, crowds gather at churches with candles, and at midnight the priest announces Christos Anesti, Christ is Risen, as fireworks go off. The chapel of St George on Lycabettus Hill and the Metropolitan Cathedral are among the most atmospheric places to be. On Sunday, families roast lamb on spits.
How do you get around Athens at Easter?
Many Athenians leave for their home villages, so the city is quieter, but areas around major churches are crowded on Friday and Saturday nights. Your chauffeur can take you up Lycabettus or near the cathedral, wait during the service and drive you back after midnight.
