King's Day, Koningsdag, is celebrated across the Netherlands on 27 April, the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. In 2027 it falls on a Tuesday, and Amsterdam hosts the country's biggest street party.
What happens on King's Day?
Amsterdam fills with people dressed in orange. The whole city becomes a free street market, the vrijmarkt, where anyone can sell second-hand goods, and the canals are packed with boats playing music. Squares and parks host concerts and parties, and the celebrations often begin the evening before on King's Night.
How do you travel in Amsterdam on King's Day?
The city centre is effectively closed to cars for most of the day, and trams take reduced routes. A chauffeur is still useful for getting in and out: your driver can drop you at the edge of the centre, for example near the Museumplein or Amstel areas, and collect you there later. For Schiphol arrivals or departures, allow extra time.
Planning your day
- Wear something orange to join in.
- Bring cash for the street market.
- Expect the biggest crowds in the Jordaan and along the canals.
- Book restaurants and transfers well in advance.
