The Festa de l'Estendard is held in Palma every year on 31 December. It commemorates King James I of Aragon's entry into the city in 1229 and is considered one of the oldest civic festivals in Europe.
What happens at the Festa de l'Estendard?
The royal standard is carried in procession from the City Hall on Plaça de Cort to the cathedral, accompanied by civic dignitaries and music, and a mass is held at La Seu. In the evening, the city turns to New Year's Eve, with the public celebration traditionally centred on Plaça de Cort.
