What happens at the Santo António festival?
On 12 June, neighbourhood groups parade down Avenida da Liberdade in the Marchas Populares, with costumes and music. Afterwards the city's old quarters, especially Alfama, Mouraria and Bica, fill with street parties, grilled sardines, basil plants and music until dawn. It is the high point of the Festas de Lisboa, which run through June.
How do you get around Lisbon on Santo António?
Avenida da Liberdade is closed for the parade, and Alfama's narrow streets are packed and closed to most traffic. Your chauffeur will drop you at the edge of the old quarters, for example near Praça do Comércio or Martim Moniz, and collect you there later, when taxis are very hard to find.
