The Scoppio del Carro takes place every Easter Sunday in front of Florence Cathedral. In 2027 Easter falls on 28 March, and the explosion traditionally happens around 11am during the Easter Mass.
What is the Scoppio del Carro?
The tradition dates back centuries. An ornate wooden cart, the Brindellone, is pulled through the streets by white oxen to the cathedral. During Mass, a dove-shaped rocket is lit at the altar and travels along a wire to the cart, setting off fireworks. A successful explosion is said to bring a good harvest and good luck to the city.
How do you get to the Duomo by chauffeur?
The area around the cathedral is pedestrian and very crowded on Easter Sunday. Your chauffeur will drop you at the edge of the limited traffic zone, a short walk from Piazza del Duomo, and meet you there afterwards to take you to lunch.
