The Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, 15 August, is one of Greece's most important holidays. On Mykonos, the main celebration is at the Monastery of Panagia Tourliani in Ano Mera, beginning on the evening of 14 August.
What happens at Panagia Tourliani?
The 16th-century monastery is the island's spiritual centre. After the services, Ano Mera's square hosts a free traditional panigiri with local musicians, wine and dancing until late. A quieter second celebration, the Enniamera, follows on 23 August.
How do you get to Ano Mera by chauffeur?
Ano Mera is in the centre of the island, around 15 minutes from Chora. Roads are busy on 15 August, which is the peak of the Greek holiday season, and parking is limited. Your chauffeur will drop you near the square and collect you after the celebrations.
