The São João festival is celebrated on the night of 23 June, the eve of the feast of St John, and continues into 24 June, a public holiday in Porto. In 2027 the main night falls on a Wednesday.
What happens at São João?
The whole city comes out to celebrate. People tap each other on the head with plastic hammers, grill sardines in the street, release paper lanterns and gather along the Douro for a large fireworks display at midnight. Many then walk to the beaches at Foz to watch the sunrise.
How do you get around Porto on São João?
The Ribeira, the riverside in Gaia and much of the centre close to traffic, and crowds are enormous. Your chauffeur will drop you at the edge of the busiest areas and collect you at an agreed point after the fireworks, or later from Foz if you stay for sunrise.
